MFD commission calculator
What a book of a given size earns in a year — trail on what you hold, upfront on what comes in.
The maths
How this is calculated.
Brokerage has two parts and they are paid on different things. Trail accrues on the book you already have; upfront is paid on money that arrives this year.
Trail = AUM × bps ÷ 10,000 · Upfront = Inflow × bps ÷ 10,000
A basis point is one hundredth of a percent, which is how AMCs quote these. 75 bps on a ₹ 50 crore book is ₹ 37,50,000 a year.
GST. Distributor commission attracts GST at 18 %. Where you are registered, this is generally collected and remitted rather than lost; where the AMC deducts it under reverse charge, what reaches you is the net figure. Both are shown because which applies depends on your registration.
What it assumes. One average trail rate across the whole book. No real statement looks like that — trail differs by AMC, by scheme, by plan and by the age of each folio.
Worked example
A ₹ 50 crore book at 75 bps.
Trail on ₹ 50,00,00,000 at 75 bps is ₹ 37,50,000 a year, accruing daily whether or not you sell anything else. Add ₹ 10 crore of new money at zero upfront — the norm in mutual funds since 2018 — and the gross is unchanged.
The number worth noticing is what next year looks like. That ₹ 10 crore of new money becomes part of the trail-bearing book, so the same 75 bps on ₹ 60 crore is ₹ 45,00,000 — a 20 % rise in brokerage from work already done. A trail book compounds in a way an upfront book does not.
Questions about this calculator.
What trail rate should I use?
It varies by AMC, scheme and plan, typically somewhere between 50 and 100 bps on equity regular plans and considerably less on debt and liquid. Direct plans pay no trail at all. Your own statements are the only accurate source; this is for sizing, not for reconciling.
Why is upfront zero by default?
Because upfront commission on mutual funds was largely discontinued in India from October 2018, with the exception of a limited amount on some SIPs from new investors. The field is there for the exceptions and for other product classes, not because it is the norm.
Should GST come off my income?
It depends on your registration. A registered distributor generally charges GST on the commission and remits it, so it passes through. Where the AMC accounts for it under reverse charge, the net figure is what arrives. Both lines are shown because the answer is not the same for everyone.
Does this reconcile against my AMC statement?
No, and it is not meant to. It applies one average rate to one number. Real brokerage is computed per folio, per scheme, per day, and reconciling it against what the AMC actually paid is exactly the job Finvica does rather than a calculator.
Is my input sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing is submitted, stored or logged — which matters here, because your AUM is nobody else’s business.
